Letter, 1910 April 2, London to [Gerald S. Howe].

Letter and autograph notes by J.P. Gilson, written in response to an inquiry by Gerald S. Howe about the manuscript commonplace book of John Fabian. Fabian's volume is cataloged and shelved separately under the call number MS. 2008.013. Gilson's letter and notes attempt to date the manuscript and identify Fabian. They also identify several scraps of poetry contained in the volume. Included with the letter are two envelopes, one with autograph notes by Gerald Howe and the other with 20th century notes in pencil.

John Fabian, native of South Carolina, was a resident of St. Paul's Parish, just north of Charleston, South Carolina. He served under the command of General Lincoln at the Siege of Savannah in 1779. During the siege he was wounded and during his recovery complied with the British government to avoid being imprisoned. Following his recovery he volunteered for service again and was under the command of Colonel William Harden. In August 1781, he was wounded in both arms, leaving his hands crippled....
